For Agatha Christie fans, the play, presented as a novel, is one of the most excellent crime thrillers I’ve read recently. And it is not a detective ‘whodunit’. Its a bit gruesome but you’ll enjoy it all the same. A deep analysis of human psyche is done which of course is AC’s strong point. Unfortunately the copyright still exists so ebooks of it will be rare (or badly edited) but its worth a buy.
Remember the hindi movie ‘Gumnam’? The haunting title track went ‘gumnam hai koi, anjan hai koi…’, its a rather an old movie. The story was lifted from this book (and was a bad adaptation).
One of the few generals in history who never lost a battle
There is a highly recommended movie – Identity – loosely based on the above mentioned book. This particular work of Agatha Christie, rather Dame Agathe Christie has been widely reproduced in different forms.
To think, the title of the play was initially ‘Ten Little Niggers’. Scandalous !
Dinesh, in 1939 the word ‘nigger’ was politically acceptable. Nothing scandalous about it.
The original nursery rhyme is ‘ten little soldier boys’. In the american edition it was ‘ten little indians’.
Don’t demand political correctness in works of literature. They merely reflect reality of society at that time. And remember at that time being a racist went (it was actually encouraged in Europe).
A.C. was not racist. At least not in her works (she was very political though, that reflected in her stories)

Also Holmes still is unbeatable in my book. Poirot and Marple just cant match, not even close. They are stars certainly, but I like Holmes for his unwavering worship of logic, something I can’t say for Poirot, and Miss Marple really is quite repelling at times.
I am sorry, I don’t remember signing up for the ‘History of the early 20th century’ class !!
Thanks for the *cough* sermon *cough*.
A.C.? Well, thanks for telling me about her, but FYI – I knew/know more about her before you could walk, courtesy a sister who has read ALL her books, maybe more than once.
I will however have to take your word on Arthur Conan Doyle’s work. Maybe I’ll go read the ‘Hound of the Baskerville’.
‘FYI’
The gangal connection!!
eh FYI strikes again
The gangal connection refuses to die politely
Holmes was my God back in school. Poirot and Marple may make good reading, but the character of Holmes appeals to a higher level of consciousness in the mind of a 12-year-old boy.
